chat: Add a unified customization marketplace
The Issue & Context
Previously, chat customization management in VS Code was fragmented, with separate overview and management pages for agents, skills, instructions, prompts, hooks, MCP servers, and plugins, lacking a unified discovery experience.
Root Cause Analysis
The absence of a centralized, source-neutral marketplace made it difficult for users to discover and manage chat customizations efficiently, especially when dealing with multiple sources and catalogs.
Solution Strategy & Architectural Pattern
Implemented a unified customization marketplace using the Discover UI, combining installed and available customizations across diverse sources into a single responsive interface with search, filters, and pagination. The marketplace supports lazy loading of sources, handles failures gracefully without hiding healthy results, and integrates installation workflows respecting existing VS Code policies.
Key Takeaway for Contributors
Centralizing customization discovery into a unified marketplace enhances user experience by simplifying management and discovery across multiple sources, while maintaining backward compatibility and robust error handling.
